How did Long Distance Swimming become a sport?

Long Distance Swimming began in the Stone age where men were swimming looking for food but swimming started to become a sport during the 19th century. In London swimming pools only started to be used in 1908 which sports started to officially made rules. They started letting women compete in Olympic Swimming in 1912 where the game was held in Stockholm, Sweden. The first marathon swimming which was the only swimming event held in open water. Long Distance Swimming involves speed, resistance and strength.

How did Diana Nyad influence the sport of Long Distance Swimming?

Diana Nyad was a terrific athlete and she never gave up on what she believed in. Diana is 63 years old and she attempted to swim 103 miles between Cuba and Florida without a shark cage which is impossible but she believe that she could do it.  Diana Nyad said “Living Life Large and Chasing our Dreams, No Matter our Age,”  Diana is not the one to quit she was willing to keep on trying until she succeed. She swam 51 hours and 5 minutes. Diana never gave up she was attacked by jellyfish, sharks and even swam in lightening storms. This women would not quit until her feet touched Florida this is what she wanted to accomplished in life and wouldn’t stop until she completed her race. A lot of people looked up to her while she swam from Cuba to Florida and Diana never gave up on her dream. When she made it to Florida she became very famous but she didn’t really care though because she completed what she wanted to do at 63 years old but she was glad that she had many fans that admired her. She was well known of what she accomplished and all of her fans look up to her because she never gave up she kept on trying until she succeeded and she did. Diana Nyad influence people to never give up and keep trying of what you believe in.

How to Swim Long Distance ?

Swimming is like crawling so if you know how to crawl you technically know how to swim. When your in the water make sure to put your face in the water to rest your neck and make sure you give your body a better position to the waters surface. In long distance swimming there is no resting your in a constant motion but to keep yourself moving in the water make your legs scissor kick instead of flutter kicks. Swimming can be very exhausting but if your willing to keep going that is good but you need to take a break and relax. Most importantly while your swimming clear your head and not let anything get to you to make you stress out.

What happens if a swimmer gets injured during a race?

Every athlete has either skid, stumble, or crawl across the finish line to win or to at least make it through. They don’t want to give up just because they got hurt but is willing to finish of what they started. If during a race a swimmer gets a cramp you should stop swimming and try to slowly rotating your foot and ankle to work out the cramps which most of the time will stop the cramps but you have to try not to panic and try to start out slow and work your way through it. When you get a new blister and your swimming in the ocean yes it is going to sting and hurt really bad but there is a cure for that which is put a water proof band-aid on it and wrap it with water proof tape or if the blisters pops you can still swim but while your kicking your feet it will distract you from the pain. The most important thing to remember is the waves a lot of athletes have gotten injured because of the waves and how strong they are but what you need to do to avoid them is to dive under the waves so they won’t hit.

What are the rules in Long Distance Swimming?

In Every sport there are rules especially in Long Distance Swimming which are no drafting, fins, booties, headphones, gloves, paddles, shark cages, netting, wet suits, face guards, more than two caps, physical contact, rest on support vehicle or kayak and performance enhancing drugs. They do not allow any of theses items during the race and if they see it they will tell you that you can not participate in the race. Also they are mostly big on drugs because something could happen if you are under the influence while in the water. They have theses rules for safety reasons and also so no one gets seriously hurt and also legal reasons too.
